In early 2015 we started looking for suitable bicycles for our long journey. After some research we decided in favour of some mountainbike frames from the 1990s for they offer quality steel tubing at reasonable prices. Soon we had bought both, frames and all necessary components. Until spring we had fully assembled our bikes and started training with them every second weekend or so. Within the following weeks we changed and optimized lots of parts but finally in autumn and after riding around 3,000 kilometers we seemingly had the bikes fitting all our needs. Last step was having the bike frames powder-coated as their 20 years old original varnish was in poor condition.
Below we have put together an overview of our gear. Parts that have been replaced since the start of our journey in April 2016 are crossed out. Parts that have been replaced with identical parts are not marked (e.g. chains). In some cases parts were replaced because they were worn, in other cases we found alternatives that we felt suited our needs better.
